YES! Alfonso Cuaron's GRAVITY Will Open With A 17 Minute Shot! Many More Scenes To Be An Unbroken 6, 8 And 10 Minutes!!

Alfonso Cuaron is known for his very long takes. CHILDREN OF MEN for example. Remember his long shot of Clive Owen searching for the child through that urban war zone and into a building under military attack? Astounding stuff.

Now comes word that Cuaron will up his ante to 17 minutes for the opening shot of GRAVITY starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.

Chris DeFaria (SUCKER PUNCH, I AM LEGEND) speaking to the 5D | FLUX Conference @ USC: "Instead of trying to create real people and what they’re doing, let’s turn it around and create almost an entirely animated film and then backwards engineer the people into that film,” he explained. “As a matter of fact, let’s not even engineer the people into the film, let’s engineer their faces. So you’ve got these little faces inside these little helmets. But there was a big hiccup that we came to I didn’t realize until later, which was that we began building it as an animated film and Alfonso had an idea that he wanted the shots to be incredibly long, and I said, ‘How long?’ And he said he wanted the first shot to be really long. And I said, ‘You mean, 40 seconds?’ ‘No, 17 minutes.'"

Apparently GRAVITY is 2 hours long but with only 156 shots! Many will be 6, 8 or 10 minutes in duration.

I don't know who is doing the post 3D conversion of GRAVITY as of yet, but let's hope for a top tier conversion! The movie seems to deserve it from all that I am hearing. I'll let you know the company as soon as I hear.

GRAVITY will be attracting us to theaters on November 21.
