WATCH: Four New Clips From Kellan Lutz's THE LEGEND OF HERCULES

I'm looking forward to seeing Summit Entertainment's THE LEGEND OF HERCULES as it is a 3D production and from the looks of the clips it emulates GLADIATOR to a fair degree in the arena - which I love. Imagine seeing GLADIATOR in 3D? Yeah, me too. This should look amazing!

You many be aware that there are two variations of HERCULES coming up - this one is director Renny Harlan's starring Kellan Lutz.

Here is the storyline for the movie:
Lutz stars as Hercules, the mythical Greek hero, demigod and son of Zeus. Betrayed by his King and sold into slavery, Hercules must use his formidable strength to fight for his freedom and return to his true love, Hebe, the Princess of Crete (played by Gaia Weiss).

THE LEGEND OF HERCULES opens on January 10, 2014.

Perfect!! NEED FOR SPEED Will Be In 3D! Also STEP UP: ALL IN...

Just as I have been saying since the beginning of THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS - these car movies have got to be in 3D. Well, DreamWorks Pictures have just brought out the checkered flag for 3D! Director Scott Waugh's NEED FOR SPEED will indeed be in 3D as confirmed by Constantin Film's upcoming list of German releases. STEP UP: ALL IN will also be in 3D, but I believe THR beat me to the punch on that one. Special thanks to my ever reliable source in Europe on the heads up!

For those curious, Waugh's background is in stunts and this thing will have plenty of practical stunts and effects in it. Looking forward to some refreshing and real action!

From the studio:
DreamWorks Pictures’ “Need for Speed” marks an exciting return to the great car culture films of the 1960s and ’70s, when the authenticity of the world brought a new level of intensity to the action on-screen. Tapping into what makes the American myth of the open road so appealing, the story chronicles a near-impossible cross-country journey for our heroes — one that begins as a mission for revenge, but proves to be one of redemption. Based on the most successful racing video game franchise ever with over 140 million copies sold, "Need for Speed" captures the freedom and excitement of the game in a real-world setting, while bringing to life the passion for the road that has made our love of cars so timeless.

The film centers around Tobey Marshall (Aaron Paul), a blue-collar mechanic who races muscle cars on the side in an unsanctioned street-racing circuit. Struggling to keep his family-owned garage afloat, he reluctantly partners with the wealthy and arrogant ex-NASCAR driver Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper). But just as a major sale to car broker Julia Maddon (Imogen Poots) looks like it will save Tobey's shop, a disastrous race allows Dino to frame Tobey for a crime he didn’t commit, and sending Tobey to prison while Dino expands his business out West.

Two years later, Tobey is released and set on revenge — but he knows his only chance to take down his rival Dino is to defeat him in the high-stakes race known as De Leon — the Super Bowl of underground racing. However to get there in time, Tobey will have to run a high-octane, action-packed gauntlet that includes dodging pursuing cops coast-to-coast as well as contending with a dangerous bounty Dino has put out on his car. With the help of his loyal crew and the surprisingly resourceful Julia, Tobey defies odds at every turn and proves that even in the flashy world of exotic supercars, the underdog can still finish first.

“Need for Speed” is presented by DreamWorks Pictures, produced by Patrick O’Brien, John Gatins and Mark Sourian, and directed by Scott Waugh. The screenplay is by George Gatins. The story is by George Gatins and John Gatins, and, based on the video game series created by Electronic Arts.

NEED FOR SPEED releases in U.S. theaters on March 14, 2014.

New Trailer For DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES !

Fox and director Matt Reeves have released the first trailer for the NATIVE 3D production DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. It's definitely looking intense and we haven't yet begun to see anything substantial yet!

As we've just posted, DAWN is a native 3D production using the rigs and services of 3ality Technica.

But what we can all definitely see that we have surely crossed the "uncanny valley" yet again with DAWN and Caesar looks amazing! The evolution of Andy Serkis into a silicon chip is just about complete! I can't believe the details in his eyes and the random nature and believe-ability of his facial tics. These are things that we humans are already very used to and may not even notice them in other humans, but take that away from a CGI character? Forget it; it's glaring and we see it right away.

I am so looking forward to this second movie of the franchise. Fingers crossed for an amazing story to match the visuals and 3D!

Here is the storyline for the movie:
A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.

DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES opens on July 18, 2014.

Spidey Update: New Trailer AND An Expanded Universe!!

Hey guys - some major developments in Sony land regarding their Marvel property, Spider-man. The studio has decided to expand their property exposure and Spider-man universe by developing projects for the villainous Venom as well as The Sinister Six.

We also have a new international trailer for you below featuring some very funny moment from the movie (spoilers obviously!) so if you like to laugh out loud while watching the movie in the theater, then perhaps consider not watching the video. But if you're anything like me, you really don't have any choice in the matter - it's a must watch. One scene involving Emma Stone is hilarious!

So back to the Sony announcement of the spin-offs - here is the official press release:
CULVER CITY, Calif., In a move to forge a new legacy in the story of Peter Parker on screen, Sony Pictures Entertainment, in association with Marvel Entertainment, is developing several new projects in the Spider-Man franchise, with Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner, Ed Solomon, and Drew Goddard to collaborate on overseeing the developing story over several films that will be produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures, and Hannah Minghella, president of Production for the studio.

The five writers, along with the two producers and Marc Webb, have formed a franchise brain trust to expand the universe for the brand and to develop a continuous tone and thread throughout the films. Under the deals, the studio announced that Kurtzman & Orci & Pinkner are writing the screenplay for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, which the studio hopes Webb will return to direct; the film will go into production next fall for release on June 10, 2016. In addition, the team will build on the cinematic foundation laid by Webb, Arad, and Tolmach in the first two movies. They will expand the franchise as Kurtzman & Orci & Solomon will write the screenplay for Venom, which Kurtzman will direct; also, Goddard will write, with an eye to direct, The Sinister Six, focusing on the villains in the franchise. Hannah Minghella and Rachel O’Connor will oversee the development and production of these films for the studio.

In tapping these five writers, the studio and the producers are guiding the future of the franchise with the writer/producers who have each played significant and key roles in developing such highly successful franchises, films, and series as Star Trek, Transformers, “Alias,” “Fringe,” Men in Black, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, World War Z, “Lost,” Cloverfield, The Cabin in the Woods, and Marvel’s upcoming “Daredevil” series.

Commenting on the announcement, Belgrad said, “The Spider-Man film franchise is one of our studio’s greatest assets. We are thrilled with the creative team we have assembled to delve more deeply into the world that Marc, Avi and Matt have begun to explore in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. We believe that Marc, Alex, and Drew have uniquely exciting visions for how to expand the Spider-Man universe in each of these upcoming films.” Arad and Tolmach added, “This collaboration was born out of the great experience we and Marc had working with Alex, Bob, and Jeff on The Amazing Spider-Man 2. With more than fifty years’ wealth of stories in the comic books to draw upon for inspiration, the Spider-Man universe is truly boundless; in addition, the Spider-Man comics have the greatest rogues gallery of any series, and to have the chance to explore that on film is truly thrilling. Until now, we have approached each film as a separate, self-contained entity, but with this move, we have the opportunity to grow the franchise by looking to the future as we develop a continuous arc for the story. That is what Alex, Bob, Jeff, Ed, and Drew will do in this unprecedented collaboration, and we’re excited about the directions they are taking the character and the world.”

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 opens on May 2, 2014.

MOVIE REVIEW: THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG - Tim's Review

Tim here, and what follows is my review for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, which is the second part in the Peter Jackson movie trilogy adapted from the book by J.R.R. Tolkien. To sum up quickly my overall thoughts: The second movie is an improvement upon the first with an exciting and thrilling adventure that ends on a stupendous cliffhanger! Next year can't come soon enough.

The story is a much faster pace, which is an improvement over the slow beginning its predecessor. It opens with a prologue in the familiar Lord of the Rings local Bree, and a carrot chomping PJ cameo! It's set before the beginning of the adventure, when Gandalf (Ian McKellan) found Thorin (Richard Armitage) and incited the quest in his mind and that they'd need a burglar for the job. Cut to immediately after the events of the last one and the company of dwarves, with wizard and Hobbit, are still being pursued by orcs. This keeps them moving as they make a quick rest at the home of Beorn (Mikael Persbrandt), who single-handedly is able to scare the orcs from attacking, before they venture into Mirkwood. Here the company breaks up as Gandalf goes to explore more in regards to the Necromancer of Dol Guldur, and the company continues on their journey through the forest to the Lonely Mountain. Unlike the book we actually get to follow Gandalf simultaneously as the company travels along their dangerous road, complete with spiders, elves, the men of Laketown, and finally the chiefest of calamities: Smaug.

Without going into any real spoilers, the story is handled very well, with the deviations not being too problematic. P.J. has been quoted in Empire as saying "I'm quite enjoying deviating from the books!" Well, here in The Desolation of Smaug he makes the boldest deviations yet. Do they work? I'll hold off my final thoughts until I see the final movie There and Back Again to judge how well the deviations work. However, initial thoughts are that some work for me and some don't. There's a great moment when Bilbo (Martin Freeman) puts on the Ring to evade the spiders and can understand what they're saying, which displays some of the way in which the Ring's magic effects him. Additionally during that sequence there's a moment where Bilbo loses the Ring and desperately, and fanatically, fights off a smaller insect creature that is crawling near the Ring. "Mine!" and the power of the Ring's pull on Bilbo is displayed so wonderfully well. That was a clever and nice deviation. Then there's the budding romance between new elf warrior Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly) and dwarf Kili (Aidan Turner) that's a new deviation that I will hold judgment on until it plays its course in the final chapter. There is one thing that happens here during this growing relationship that pays homage to Lord of the Rings, but I feel that it's not right here and belongs solely to The Fellowship of the Ring. You'll know it when you see it. The story has many great moments, including a Martin Freeman one after he gets the dwarves into the barrels and realizes he didn't get a barrel for himself. The barrel sequence is thrilling (with Bombur (Stephen Hunter) awesomeness), Laketown is impressive, and the Lonely Mountain is immense, and Smaug stupendous!

"An exciting and thrilling middle chapter to The Hobbit trilogy!"

The performances in the film continue to be fantastic. Martin Freeman was the perfect casting for Bilbo as he brings such humor and humility to the role. Ian McKellan continues his magnificent work as a conjurer of more magic inside the role of Gandalf as there is on display onscreen from the magicians at WETA Digital. Richard Armitage displays the most range yet as he begins to let show Thorin's family treasure madness taking form, and Kenn Scott as Balin continues to council him and remind him of his duties as a leader. Ken Scott really makes it that when rewatching The Fellowship of the Ring a tear can't help but be shed upon seeing Balin's tomb. Evangeline Lilly was a wonderful addition to the cast in a newly made-up character, and she played her scenes very well. Especially against a hauntingly majestic Thranduil (Lee Pace) and Legolas. Orlando Bloom returns to the role as if riding an oliphant, and has a wonderful moment when searching the dwarves' possessions upon their capture and comes upon a photo of young Gimli amongst Gloin's things. He and Gloin (Peter Hambleton) share a great moment that will make many fans laugh. Sylvestor McCoy makes an additional appearance as Radagast and it's a wonderful treat yet again. Too bad his screen time was so short. Hopefully there will be more of him in the third installment. Luke Evans did a fantastic job as Bard, and as well his ancestor Girion in a flashback, and added much more depth to the character than was in the source material. Stephen Fry was absolutely sublime casting for the Master of Laketown. Finally we come to Benedict Cumberbatch who played both the Necromancer and the titular Smaug. What a performance! Benedict Cumberbatch brought Smaug to life in such a way that was awe inspiring, magnificent, and a real treasure. He didn't just provide his voice, but instead gave a performance capture that lit up the screen.

Andrew Lesnie continued his breathtaking cinematography in this installment, and the stereo 3D (rigs provided by the awesome 3ality Technica) and high frame rate maintained to bring the world to life in a way that makes me wish more movies were shot this way. 3ality did some customized rigs for the barrel sequence, and the 3D during that sequence is insane. Since a huge amount of this movie is digital visual effects it's important to bring up the fantastic work of WETA Digital, and their work greatly benefitted from the stereo 3D and HFR. Smaug in particular was amazing to see in the format. Some of my favorite moments from the film regarding the stereo 3D are the snow falling during a pivotal scene in Laketown, the great expansive and empty halls of the Lonely Mountain, and the massive scale of Smaug. However, what's all this without the sound design? Dolby Atmos preserves the 3D atmosphere in the sound, and there was so much in the sound design that the world felt entirely real. I can't imagine how many coins they had to rustle with to get all those different variations. Howard Shore provided a rich score that introduced many new themes. In particular Smaug's theme was one that sticks with you for a long time after the screen had cut to black. On a technical level this is a masterpiece.

Peter Jackson did a fantastic job directing this movie, but special mention also has to go to Andy Serkis as the Second Unit Director. Together they brought the world of Middle-Earth to life with all the rest of their team with so much verisimilitude to Tolkien's descriptions. I'm extremely excited to see the next installment, and as stated earlier December 2014 can't come soon enough.

EXCLUSIVE: Both Ridley Scott's EXODUS And Matt Reeves' DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES To Be Released In Native 3D!!

Yes! I believe MarketSaw is the first to have this information for you. I'm very excited that Ridley Scott's EXODUS and Matt Reeves DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES will both be released in Native 3D! While we have known for some time now that both EXODUS and DAWN were going to be 3D, we didn't know if they were going to be conversions or not. They're not.

I've further found out that both of these stereo projects will be using the industry leading 3ality Technica rigs for the productions! These guys are at the top of their game, nailing tentpole after tentpole with an upcoming list that also includes X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, POMPEII, THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG and HERCULES.

I've heard from two very reliable sources (not 3ality Technica obviously - they are under NDA) that this is happening and I couldn't be happier!

The photos are taken from the set of EXODUS (Christian Bale is standing beside the 3ality Technica rig that is holding the new 6K RED DRAGON cameras!) and the sets are impressively massive and detailed.

Dariusz Wolski is again teaming up with Ridley as his cinematographer (they simply nailed PROMETHEUS - gorgeous picture!) and they are at it again with EXODUS and they are shooting with 6K cameras.

Here are some details on the RED DRAGON:
- Dragon's full frame resolution is 6144x3160 and it's sensor size is 30.7x15.8mm, which is an aspect ratio of 1.94:1.
- What does 6K work out to for still shooters? 19.4 megapixels, print resolution of 20.48x10.53 inches at 300 DPI.
- Dragon's ISO 2000 appears "cleaner" than the Mysterium X at ISO 800. Basically less than half the noise of the MX sensor.
- Dragon's currently been measured at 18+ stops of captured dynamic range. Noticeably more than modern film stocks.
- The Dragon Upgrade itself represents a new sensor, new ASIC boards, and other new technologies.
- Max frames per second at full resolution? 100fps at 6K for Epic Dragon, 60fps at 5K for Scarlet Dragon.
- What about IR and the OLPF? There's a new IR OLPF designed specifically for Dragon.
- What about power consumption and heat? The Dragon sensor uses less power and generates less heat than the Mysterium X Sensor.
Above is a quick look at how the Red Dragon sensor compares to standard motion picture film formats. Notable observations to take from this are:
- Dragon's 6K is noticeably wider than S35, but nearly exactly as tall as S35 Academy. Useful for anamorphic shooters.
- Dragon's 5K is a smidge wider than S35 Full Aperture and a smidge shorter as S35 3-perf. Likely providing enough room for all S35 designed lenses.
- Dragon's 4K is just a bit thinner than S35 Academy.
- Dragon's 3K is noticeably wider than S16, and just a bit taller.
6K is the maximum resolution of Epic Dragon. 6144x3160 or 19.4 megapixels at a 1.94:1 aspect ratio.
6K is 9.36x more pixels than 1080p.
6K is 8.78x more pixels than 2K.
6K is 2.2x more pixels than 4K.
6K is 1.4x more pixels than 5K.
At 300 DPI you can make a 20.48x10.53 inch print from a full 6K Dragon image.
At 150 DPI you can make a 40.96x21.067 inch print from a full 6K Dragon image.
6K is 14% more resolution than 5K for a pristine full debayer down to 4K. Meaning it's a 66.7% down sample/debayer to 4K.

More info when I get it! I'll check with 3ality Technica to see if I can get any information about the rigs / tech / crews they are using despite their NDA. The 2014 3D movie calendar will be updated shortly...

GODZILLA Teaser Trailer Released! VFX look stunning!

WOW! This will be epic in Stereo 3D! Tim here, and my mind is blown my this teaser trailer. I mean, literally blown. Godzilla, directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters from 2010) the short synopsis is: A giant radioactive monster called Godzilla appears to wreak destruction on mankind. The movie stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Bryan Cranston. There is still no word on whether this is a native 3D film or a conversion.

The cinematographer was Seamus McGarvey (Marvels: The Avengers) and it was shot on the ARRI ALEXA. Likely it's a conversion, and I believe this since in the trivia for the movie on IMDB it says "For the 1950s scenes, cinematographer Seamus McGarvey wanted "a peeled look with muted colors and diffused highlights." To achieve this, he shot those scenes with vintage 1960s camera lenses and additionally had the shades of black in those scenes digitally tinted in magenta." For now you can enjoy the trailer below as we work to find this native or conversion information out.

OFFICIAL TRAILER:

The way this trailer opens is absolutely stunning. LOVE IT! The paratroopers going into battle over music (Lux Aeterna (1966) by György Ligeti) that was used at the beginning of 2001: A Space Odyssey is absolutely chilling, and visually breathtaking. Edwards did an excellent job with his Monsters movie, writing, directing and doing the VFX for it, and it looks like we're getting a great film with his Godzilla. Apparently you can also check it out on the big screen in front of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug this weekend.

The expected release of this mega movie is May 16th, 2014 in 3D with Dolby Atmos.

There is no consensus on Rotten Tomatoes yet, but as of writing this the Tomatometer is at 76%, which is up from the 65% that An Unexpected Journey scored. Either way, the film still looks to be amazing. Enjoy both TV-Spots below:

HOBBIT UPDATE: Production Diary #13 And Middle-Earth Chrome Experiment Live

A Journey Through Middle-earth

Tim here and Peter Jackson has brought us the 13th production diary for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is out! First, BEWARE OF SPOILERS! There's a lot of great Behind the Scenes footage in here, and it's wonderful if you're curious about the filmmaking process, but that doesn't mean that if you're trying to preserve your viewing experience that you'll walk away without getting some undesirable information.

We also get an amazing view of the 3ality Technica 3D rigs holding Jackson's Red Epics that are shooting in HFR 3D (High Frame Rate - 48 fps). Love it!

There's a wonderful amount of humor contained in this production diary. It's funny seeing Bilbo and the dwarves playing table tennis while on break. We get some Laketown BTS that includes Stephen Fry, who might have been some of the best casting along with Sylvester McCoy. Another thing clear is how huge the sets were in these massive sound stages. Amazing to hear how much virtual water and gold the VFX guys at WETA Digital had to make. Alright, there's a lot in this one, so I won't hold you back much longer. Enjoy it below, and be sure to read after the video for information about the Google Chrome Middle-Earth Experiment:

Additionally the Chrome Experiment I wrote about a few months ago has hit the web! It's an interesting interactive map of Middle-Earth and has a few fun games and places to explore. Currently you can explore the Trollshaws, Rivendell, Dol Guldur, Thranduil's Hall, and Laketown, with The Lonely Mountain to be unlocked soon. I wish it was a little more like Google Earth in that you could zoom in to all the Middle-Earth locations and map out the land. It would be especially awesome if they had Hobbiton and the Shire. Maybe in a future update that will be possible. It's a good start for now. I'd like to be able to visit some of the locations from Lord of the Rings as well. You can check it out here: http://middle-earth.thehobbit.com

On December 13th The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits IMAX 3D and RealD 3D screens in HFR and SFR. THIS IS A WEEK AWAY!

MUST WATCH: TWO Versions Of The New Trailer For THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 !!

Finally it's here! Director Marc Webb and Sony have released the first trailer for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 and it doesn't disappoint! Love the action and the especially love how awesome Dane DeHaan looks as Harry Osborn. This is going to be good! Jamie Foxx looks killer as Electro too.

PLUS - and this is a brilliant idea - a voice over commentary by Webb and some of the cast to get us to watch it over and over again (as if that wasn't going to happen!).

Here's the storyline for the movie:
We've always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.
It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN opens on May 2, 2014 in 3D.

UPDATED! MUST WATCH: 4 New Clips From THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG !

**SAME DAY UPDATE: I've added a fourth clip that was just released: "Into The Barrels"!

Obviously these clips are minor spoilers because, well - it's clips from the actual movie so keep that in mind as you read on.

These three clips are starting to piece together the stories that are taking place in part two of the THE HOBBIT from Peter Jackson and company. We have clips discussing the sanity of trekking to the mountain, some of Tauriel's history and an ominous warning from an orc.

I LOVE the VFX for the orc in the third clip below! Looking wonderful guys! Weta's doing another smashing job. And obviously I can't wait for the HFR 3D experience either! 3ality Technica was on this job so look for outstanding results once again.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG opens on December 13 in HFR 3D, 3D and flat.

New Hi Res Triple Panel Poster For THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2

Sony has released a high resolution triple panel poster for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 revealing the villains that spidey will have to deal with including Electro, Rhino and Green Goblin. Some have complained that this is too many villains to deal with in one movie. While I tend to agree at a high level, I'm entering into this thing with an open mind. However one has to remember these are top villains in the webhead world - I can't imagine these guys getting dispatched in just one movie. We'll see.

Here's the storyline for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2:
We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 opens on May 2, 2014.

3D Movie Release Updates From Legendary: WARCRAFT And SEVENTH SON

Some release updates for you from Legendary Pictures on some anticipated 3D projects in the coming years, namely Duncan Jones' WARCRAFT and Sergei Bodrov's SEVENTH SON.

First up lets discuss WARCRAFT as I've played World of Warcraft and love it. It's about time that a feature based on this popular MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) hit the screen! Right now I prefer LOTRO (Lord of the Rings Online) as it is entirely free to play - although paying a tiny bit here and there make things much more enjoyable. But I digress. WARCRAFT is coming from a very vibrant and expansive universe. The groundwork has all been done in the game as far as environment and flora / fauna, and now comes the story. Whether they weave the movie's story into the gameplay's story to some degree remains to be seen. I definitely think we will be seeing some of the lore introduced at least.

WARCRAFT will be released now on March 11, 2016. That's plenty of time to pull together a really good effort for this. Can't wait! The movie was originally going to be released on December 18, 2015 and well... it's kinda busy then on the silver screens, so great move.

Here's a description for WARCRAFT:
Legendary Pictures’ WARCRAFT, a 3D epic adventure of world-colliding conflict based upon Blizzard Entertainment’s globally-renowned universe, will be directed by Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) and is written by Charles Leavitt and rewritten by Duncan Jones. The producers are Charles Roven, Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Alex Gartner. Stuart Fenegan, Jillian Share and Brent O’Connor will serve as executive producers. Blizzard’s Chris Metzen will co-produce.

Next up is SEVENTH SON. From the storyline below it sounds as though it could come from a WARCRAFT universe as well (it won't). But I love the direction Legendary is taking with these projects and I'm hoping for more!

SEVENTH SON will be released on February 6, 2015 and distributed by Universal Pictures.

Here's the storyline for THE SEVENTH SON:
In a time of enchantments when legends and magic collide, the sole remaining warrior of a mystical order (Oscar winner Jeff Bridges) travels to find a prophesized hero born with incredible powers, the last Seventh Son (Ben Barnes). Torn from his quiet life as a farmhand, the unlikely young hero embarks on a daring adventure with his battle-hardened mentor to vanquish a dark queen (Julianne Moore) and the army of supernatural assassins she has dispatched against their kingdom. Sergei Bodrov directed SEVENTH SON from a screenplay by Matt Greenberg, Charles Leavitt and Steve Knight, based on the book “The Spook’s Apprentice” by Joseph Delaney. The film is produced by Basil Iwanyk, Thomas Tull and Lionel Wigram. Jon Jashni, Brent O’Connor and Alysia Cotter are executive producers, with Jillian Share and Erica Lee co-producing.

More updates when I get them!

New Viral Campaign For X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST - Magneto Assassinated JFK

Spoiler warning! For the movie, not who killed John F. Kennedy. Unless... No.

But we do have a viral video making its way through the interwebs depicting Magneto as the true assassin of JFK by altering the trajectory of Oswald's 2nd bullet on that fateful day in Texas. The video names the event as "The Bent Bullet" theory and you can read more about it here.

This movie is looking MASSIVE and I'm loving it already just thinking about what goodies director Bryan Singer and his amazing cast have in store for us!

Here's the storyline for the movie:
The ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. The beloved characters from the original X-Men film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from X-MEN: FIRST CLASS in an epic battle that must change the past — to save our future.

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST opens on May 23, 2014.

Must Watch: Jonas Cuaron's Short Film Tie In With GRAVITY And How It May Make Oscar History

Very cool development here with the release of Jonas Cuaron's short film entitled ANINGAAQ and its tie-in with his father's amazing movie GRAVITY which is still in theaters. The rest of the post has minor spoilers in it as well as the short film, so don't read ahead unless you've seen GRAVITY or worst case scenario, you don't plan to see it (but please do - highly recommended).

ANINGAAQ tells the story of what happens on the other end of the radio transmissions that Sandra Bullock's character is able to initiate in GRAVITY. Until now, no one new who she was speaking to and under what terms. Now we know!

The 7 minute short was short entirely in Greenland at a cost of $100,000 (mainly transportation costs of equipment and crew). Moreover, Warner Bros. has decided to submit the film as an entry to the Academy for Best Short Film Oscar. This will mark the first time that a movie and a short film that have a tie-in have both been nominated for an Academy Award (assuming they both get the nod), and the first time that this has happened as father / son duo.

Check out the short below:

Exclusive Interview: Steve Schklair, 3D Producer on STALINGRAD - We Talk THE HOBBIT And THE GREAT GATSBY Too!

I recently had the the opportunity and pleasure to speak with Steve Schklair, 3D Producer on STALINGRAD (catch up on our coverage of the movie here) and CEO of our friends at 3ality Technica. The movie was directed by the much in demand Russian filmmaker Fedor Bondarchuk and is the entry from Russia for the upcoming Academy Awards, Best Foreign Language Oscar.

Steve and I talk about the movie at length (the whole interview is just over 30 minutes) including segments on the director, the 3ality Technica equipment and services, the magnificent sets, Russian crews, the film's esthetics, budget, box office, some of the history involved, Fedor Bondarchuk and his cinematographer, etc.

We also touch upon THE GREAT GATSBY and THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG as 3ality Techica was instrumental in the making of those 3D movies, as well as what's next for Steve and 3ality.

After a record breaking launch in Russia and the Ukraine, STALINGRAD is now enjoying huge box office returns in China. To date the movie has earned $65.7 million with more results due from China.

Here's the interview; enjoy:

Here's the storyline for STALINGRAD:
Written by Ilya Tilkin and Sergey Snezhkin and directed by Fedor Bondarchuk, STALINGRAD is set in 1942, when invading German troops were in control of the Volga River. A group of Soviet soldiers finds a young woman trapped behind enemy lines and works to protect her. Thomas Kretschmann and Yanina Studilina star.

And here's a description of Battle of Stalingrad from Wikipedia:
The Battle of Stalingrad (August 23, 1942–February 2, 1943) was a major battle of World War II in which Nazi Germany and its allies fought the Soviet Union for control of the city of Stalingrad (now Volgograd) in the southwestern Soviet Union. Marked by constant close-quarters combat and lack of regard for military and civilian casualties, it is among the bloodiest battles in the history of warfare. The heavy losses inflicted on the German army make it arguably the most strategically decisive battle of the whole war. Afterwards, the German forces never regained the initiative in war in the East.

If you haven't seen the trailer yet (And I highly recommend you do), check it out here.

Definitely check out this movie if you have the opportunity and I'll have more information about distribution soon for western audiences.

The Force Of GRAVITY: $500 Million In Box Office And Still Climbing

What can I say that I haven't said already? If you haven't seen GRAVITY yet in theaters, get out and enjoy. Beyond that, what a remarkable achievement for Alfonso Cuaron and Warner Bros. The movie will hit $500 million in worldwide box office this weekend and is still drawing in the crowds and has already pulled ahead of STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS in receipts.

Look for GRAVITY to hit ~$260 million domestically and ~$300 million in foreign markets for a nice ~$560 million take PLUS CHINA. I haven't included China in the mix here but I expect big things from them, especially with their IMAX screens. Is expecting a $600 million a long shot? I don't think so. We'll see.

Anyway, I'm just so thrilled with the success of a movie that deserves to be successful! Cuaron nailed it. I wish the movie was longer because the time just flies when you're watching it, but really - it's a masterpiece.

We need more original stories like this with near perfect 3D and acting!

First Teaser Trailer For Disney's MALEFICENT Arrives

I haven't given any judgement on MALEFICENT yet. I'm on the fence. Could be a bomb or a huge win - likely the later. But it had better be good for Angelina Jolie who gave up what seems to be an Oscar nod for turning down the lead in GRAVITY. Now THAT's a bad move. The Sandra Bullock role is once in a lifetime if you ask me. But I digress.

I don't find Jolie's character all that intimidating actually. The horns look cool, but just some extended cheekbones and some contact lenses? Sure it's early on in the movie. Likely there are some surprises to that end as the movie progresses and Maleficent turns more, shall we say, evil.

I did like the Pandora like environment in a few scenes. It is certain Disney spared no expense in getting this thing done. At this stage though, I was hoping for more.

Here's the storyline:
From Disney comes MALEFICENT—the untold story of Disney’s most iconic villain from the 1959 classic SLEEPING BEAUTY. A beautiful, pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom, until one day when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal—an act that begins to turn her pure heart to stone. Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora. As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom—and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.

MALEFICENT opens on May 30, 2014 in 3D and in flat.

HERCULES: THE LEGEND BEGINS Opens In 3D On January 10, 2014

**UPDATE: Well someone messed up at Summit, or they've got to get their act together, but just days after announcing very publicly that HERCULES: THE LEGEND BEGINS will open on February 4, 2014 - they change it to January 10, 2014. So let it be.

The first of two Hercules movies is dropping on February 7, 2014 January 10, 2014 as Summit has announced its intentions with the property. This is the Kellan Lutz movie, not the Dwayne Johnson starrer.

I don't have too much to say about the production yet as I wasn't all that thrilled with the first trailer and I haven't seen any 3D yet - hopefully that feeling goes away with the next trailer. Click here for all of our Hercules coverage.

Here's the press release:
Summit Entertainment, a LIONSGATE® (NYSE: LGF) company, has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Millennium Films’ action-adventureHERCULES: THE LEGEND BEGINS starring Kellan Lutz (THE TWILIGHT SAGA, the upcoming THE EXPENDABLES 3) and directed by Renny Harlin (DIE HARD 2, CLIFFHANGER). Summit will release the film in 3D and 2D nationwide on February 7, 2014. The deal was announced today by Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger, and Avi Lerner, Chairman of Millennium Films.

The supporting cast includes Scott Adkins (THE EXPENDABLES 2), Liam McIntyre (“Spartacus”), Liam Garrigan (“Strike Back”), Johnathon Schaech (“Ray Donovan,” “The Client List”), Roxanne McKee (“Game Of Thrones”) and Rade Serbedzija (“Red Widow”). Screenplay is by Daniel Gliat. Producers are Danny Lerner, Les Weldon, Boaz Davidson and Renny Harlin. Executive Producers are Avi Lerner, Trevor Short and John Thompson.

“We look forward to working with Millennium to bring this larger-than-life hero to theaters and action fans in the new year,” said Friedman and Wachsberger. “We are also very proud to work on a project starring Kellan, with whom we have grown very close throughout the release of all five TWILIGHT SAGA films as well as the production of THE EXPENDABLES 3 scheduled for release next year.”

“We’re thrilled to be expanding our relationship with the very talented team at Lionsgate and Summit, who had such extraordinary success with Kellan in THE TWILIGHT SAGA franchise and with whom we have a great partnership on THE EXPENDABLES franchise,” Lerner said. “And I’m very pleased that ours will be the first movie in the 21st century to reintroduce modern audiences to this classic, timeless story.”

The deal was negotiated on behalf of Lionsgate and Summit by Jason Constantine, Lionsgate’s President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Eda Kowan, Lionsgate’s SVP of Acquisitions, and Wendy Jaffe, Lionsgate’s EVP of Business & Legal Affairs for Acquisitions & Co-Productions, and on behalf of Millennium by Avi Lerner and Mark Gill.

HERCULES: THE LEGEND BEGINS opens on February 7, 2014 January 10, 2014 in 3D.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD Hammers The Box Office !

Can Marvel do no wrong? Seriously. They are kings of the box office, they have a recently renewed TV series with AGENT OF S.H.I.E.L.D. and just signed a deal with Netflix to have four of their characters (Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones) with separate series culminating in a crossover series entitled THE DEFENDERS, all of which is based in Hell's Kitchen, NYC.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD continues in the Marvel tradition of kick ass action, great storytelling, compelling characters all in a solid 3D conversion (haven't seen it yet, but my assumption based on previous productions). Of course being a follow up to THE AVENGERS doesn't hurt as IRON MAN 3 can attest with it's $1.2 billion take (that's fifth best EVER). So we'll see where Thor 2 goes. It has already hit $140 million worldwide with only one day reporting in North America. My projection is $90 million for the weekend domestically.

Here's the storyline for the movie:
Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s Thor and Marvel’s The Avengers, Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.
